I’m No Michelle Obama…Yet!

Being First Lady of a church is very similar to being First Lady of the United States I have found.  There are strikingly very similar issues, tasks, and criticisms that befall both of us.

The First Lady of a church is expected to be the role model of sound christian living, morality, and a strong marital relationship.

The First Lady of the United States is expected to be the role model of sound American living and values, morality, and a supportive and strong marital relationship.

The First Lady of a church is expected to spearhead her own agenda as it relates to the church. Whether it be teaching a Sunday School class, being in the leadership position over a ministry, etc.

The First Lady of the United States is expected to spearhead her own agenda which Michelle Obama has by speaking out on working moms and equal pay, supporting families of our troops, and putting family first as Mom in Chief

I have been a First Lady now for 3 years and I have not honed in on what my leadership position IS going to be.  I really needed to get acclimated to our new church home and congregation and not come in as “taking over” things.  I come from the philosophy of sitting back and listening for a while, which can tell you a lot about what is going on and what needs to be going on.

Today I am making the commitment to name my agenda as First Lady.  I intend to accomplish two things this year. First, implementing and spearheading the nursing and health ministry within our church and community.  I feel it of the utmost importance to make resource available to those in need as it relates to health and the holistic healing of our spirits.  Secondly, I plan to “try” and exemplify more of how to live a full Christian life while being a busy working mom.  It can be a challenge to be at every church event when you have a toddler on a schedule for naps and eating.

And about the criticisms…Why is it such a fascination with the First Lady’s wardrobe??!!  This is a common issue for all First Ladies I am sure.  Again, my take on this is that if we become so focused on what we look like on the OUTSIDE..we may neglect the real work, which is bettering ourselves on the INSIDE!!  To all my first ladies…..enriching and developing your spirit WILL show on the outside and that is more beautiful than any suit, hairstyle, or pumps you can wear.
