Schools…Public vs. Private

Thomas will be two in July and I am already searching for the best school environment for him to attend preschool. I have learned that you have to do your research early and be proactive to get into the schools that are the best fit for you and your family.

There are a few public magnet schools that are great in Chattanooga but very competitive to get your name on the list.  It is required that you sign up a year in advance of the school start date.  Just from internet research, one school in particular sounds like a really good fit for Thomas.  I have not done a school tour or talked to many other parents with children who attend there, but logically, that is my next step.

Since I attended private schools for the majority of my life, this would be an option also.  But wow the tuition is outrageous.  From my experience, there is not that much difference between a public and private school in education provided, as long as you stay actively involved in your child’s education. But the high tuition does make a difference in the environment of the school. This is very important to me.  I would LOVE to find a school that has engaged teachers, is safe, provides culture diversity, and promotes independence and responsibility.  We can’t expect our schools to do it all, that is why “teaching” our kids at home (social skills) is still a top priority.  But wouldn’t it be great if the transition from home to school could be effortless?

In my opinion, the best thing you can do for your kids is to provide them with a great education and teach them to be a “good” person overall.  Each of these will make life much easier for them.
