Love Never Forgets!

Yesterday, Thomas and I went to visit my father, who has Alzheimer’s disease, at the nursing home yesterday. It was one of the better visits we have had in a while.  My mother happened to be there also visiting, as she always does on a daily basis, and we got a chance to surprise her.

I always let Thomas walk in by himself so that he can say “HI PAPA” very loudly.  The PaPa part still does not sink in with my Dad because he doesn’t connect the little boy with me being a mother and him being the granddad to this little boy.

Anyway, Thomas was calling my name (which is Mama now) over and over when my Dad finally says “why is that little boy calling you mama?”  It was kinda funny.  I told him that the little boy was my baby and that he was the granddad.  He had a huge smile on his face.

Then my Mom asks him if he is ready for dinner and that they were serving pork chops.  He told her that he would eat them only if they were as good as the ones she cooks.  That’s when I realized that he was flirting with her.  After 50 years of marriage and suffering Alzheimer’s Disease, he still recognized the love of his life and was STILL in love.

They held hands throughout the rest of our visit and I found that to be calming to my soul.
