Neighbors!

Does it seem like we don’t know who our neighbors are anymore? And do we even CARE who our neighbors are anymore?  I think we should!!!  What happened to the good ole days when we actually knew all of the neighbors on our street?  We knew their first and last names, what church they attended, what schools the kids went to, where they worked, their home phone numbers, etc.

We could walk on their property without thinking we were going to get shot or eaten by a pitbull. We would have an actual conversation with them if we both were out in the yard.  We could call any of them in an emergency if need be. And we felt safe when our kids had to stay over because Mom or Dad was running late from work.

Nowadays, we don’t know anything about our neighbors and some want it that way.  We barely wave at one another when we happen to be outside at the same time.  We don’t go over to have a brief conversation. We don’t know anyones last names (let alone first names).  This is why when we read stories about something tragic happening in the news and the neighbors almost always say that they didn’t know much about them or they “seemed” like a happy couple.

No one is saying that we have to be best friends and host dinner parties every other weekend, but let’s at least be nice to one another, KNOW the family’s name, and watch out for one another.

That is the LEAST we can do.  I am going to make a committed effort to have a conversation with at least one of the neighbors, that I don’t know well, this week and see if it makes a difference.  They may blow me off but, oh well, I’ll just move on to the next neighbor.

I know most of my neighbors. But this has motivated me to get to know the new people on my street. Thanks for the encouragement
