Using Your Talents, Gifts, and Skills As Your Ministry!

by Kathy Sykes on June 3, 2009 · 2 comments

Last night I attended a cooking class taught by one of my dearest friends of twenty years at a local church resource center.  She began the class by telling everyone that the cooking class was her business and ministry.  She is not a professional cook/chef but has had to cook a variety of different dishes for her family of six over the years.  She loves preparing great meals for her family and friends and when the church solicited “skills and gifts” that people could contribute to the resource center, she offered to teach a cooking class.

Cooking is something she loves to do. This is her gift. She loves meeting new people. This is her gift. She loves sharing what she knows with others in need. This is her gift.  She has been teaching the classes now for 3 years and her classes are almost always completely full. She has requests to host cooking classes at other churches in the city and has been asked to cater events.

From her willingness to share her talents, gifts, and skills as her ministry, her “business” has blossomed as well.

At the end of each session she challenges everyone to utilize their skills in a specific way that may help someone in need. The cooking class was more than “just” a cooking class for me, but a class in exploring my talents and gifts as a ministry for Christ.

I challenge you to find the ministry within yourself!
