Talking Back!

My two year old son is currently in his “talking back” to mommy stage. It doesn’t matter what I say to him, he always has a comeback or opposing argument for me. I do realize that with toddlers they go through a stage of challenging everyone and everything in order to see what they can get away with. It is part of the growing process.

But with that comes the “teaching” process. I am trying to explain to him that when he does that, that he is “talking back” to mommy and that is not a good thing. He will be soon attending a new summer program and then on to Pre-K 3 in the Fall. This is my prime opportunity to teach him that he has to follow instructions from me and other adults.

Yes, I love it that he has his own opinions and knows how to express himself. But there is a right way and a wrong way to express himself in certain situations. As a parent, I feel that it is my job to help him to determine when is the right time to speak up and when is the time to be quiet.

How have you dealt with the “talking back” stage?
