What is Rokenbok?

Last month my hubby and baby boy had the wonderful opportunity to be introduced to the Rokenbok Rokblock building set. They were asked to review and play with the building set to see how “child-friendly” and enjoyable it was for preschoolers. Here is their review:

1. Packaging/Marketing: When our package arrived, our son immediately knew that it was for him even though it was hidden inside of a brown box. When we opened the outer packaging revealing the above box, our son’s eyes became REALLY big and then he knew this was something that he wanted to try.

2. Instructions:

Since you can make a number of different items with the Rokenbok blocks, the instructions are very detailed on how to make things such as an airplane, truck, and helicopter. My husband also encouraged our three year old to look at the pictures and tell him where each piece was supposed to go. The fact that the instructions are mostly pictures instead of words, is great for preschoolers who have not mastered reading yet.

3. Sturdiness/Durability: The Rokenbok blocks are made of durable plastic similar to the lego type blocks. My son has not been able to bend or break any of the blocks, as of yet, which proves that they are built to last. So far, the blocks have been stood on, placed in the bathtub, and thrown around our home, but yet, they are still in good condition.

4. Ease of Use: Even without an adult to assist, the Rokenbok blocks are easy to assemble by a preschooler. They all fit together like a peg in a hole. Our toddler has fun creating his own masterpieces with the colorful blocks which includes the primary colors.

5. Play vs. Educational:

From a mom’s perspective, I think that the idea of a child being able to make many different things from the same set of blocks allows them to think “critically”. Critical thinking is one characteristic that I feel is lacking in our children nowadays and it is very important that a child be able to think through situations in order to come up with the best result. This is useful with standardize testing and with everyday life situations.
