Your Virtual Pharmacist-Portion Control is KEY!

Over this past year, I have put on several pounds due to not controlling my portion sizes when eating. Exercise was also a big downfall of mine, but no matter how much exercise you do, if you continue to stuff yourself with food, then you are defeating the purpose.

Today, even, I am preparing dinner for my family of three (2 adults and a toddler) and thought to myself that one package of chicken will not be enough. No, I was not thinking about having left overs for the next day, I was thinking about not having enough servings for today’s meal! THAT IS JUST GREED!!

I found this wonderful article on cnn.com that details 8 tips for controlling portion sizes and thought I would share it with my readers who may be struggling with the same thing.

A few tips that stood out for me were:

1. Limit portions, lose weight- the amount of food you consume is directly proportional to weight gain/loss

2. Know you rules of thumb-know what an ounce and a cup are when measuring your food.

3. Use portion control plates- you cannot go over the space allowed

Another thing I have noticed, although my son is not overweight, is that he asks for food even if he has just finished eating dinner or a snack. I do not want him to get into the “habit” of using food because he is bored or just to have something to do. This is when we get into trouble.

Everyone must make a conscious decision to be mindful of what we choose to put in our mouths/body and how much we put in our bodies. We should strive to be as healthy as we can be.
