Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters

My son Thomas received this book for Christmas from one of my besties. Even though this book was written by Barack Obama as a letter to his daughters, the book is still very appropriate for boys.

The premise of the book is several statements of praise and encouragement to his daughters for certain character traits they exhibit such as being smart, creative, and brave and then he compares them to some of history’s most incredible leaders such as Jackie Robinson, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Maya Lin.

What I loved about this book is that teaches children that good character can take you far in life. It teaches that even though you have good character, life is not easy. It teaches that both women and men can be successful in whatever they love to do. There are a variety of ethnities and cultures spotlighted in the book. I even learned a thing or two.

At the back of the book, there is more commentary on the background of each individual featured in the book and is a great way for children to begin learning how to research subjects WITHOUT using the computer.

The illustrations by Loren Long are magnificent and each historical figure is also depicted as a child in the book. I think this is a great tool to show that all great people were once children too.

I highly recommend this book for all children ages 3 and up.
