Giving Up My Guilty Pleasure In Exchange For A Better Life!

Okay, it is confession time. My name is Kathy Sykes I have a love for “bad”  reality television!!!

I watch all of the Real Housewives series (Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Orange County, New Jersey, and even horrible Miami), the MTV series Teen Mom, and most of the ones on VH1 (I am too ashamed to name them here) and for some reason I can’t get enough of it. They are like a train wreck…you can’t look away! AND it’s killing my brain cells and creativity.

So in 2012, I have had ENOUGH!!!!!

Why? Because I am a firm believer in what you read, watch, or listen to has a strong hold on how you live and view life. And I need to practice what I preach. No, I don’t curse and fight like most of the women on these shows, but these shows can make your mind think crazy things and you may start questioning your own situations. We are living in the era of “DRAMA” and that is what you get from reality television. AND if that wasn’t enough, the image that these shows portray of women and relationships is far from what I want my son or nieces to believe is true.

Reality should start in our homes. Exemplifying behavior that is nurturing, positive, and supporting real growth is what we should be consuming ourselves with. Yes, I know that there are negative aspects of life, but why sensationalize it nd lead people to believe that it is normal. It is NOT normal!  If I do decide to watch television, I should be viewing a show that  don’t have to change the channel when my son walks in the room. I want better for my life, spirit and soul. I have to make changes.

What are my other options:

1. Turn off the television and spend more time with family strengthening the unit

2. There are great programming that are similar to reality T.V. (Top Chef, HGTV, Oprah’s life lessons)

3. Reading a great book

4. Exercising (Gotta get out there a DO IT)

5. Quiet time and prayer

Whew, I am glad I got that off my chest. Now I can move on with my life in the light….the MARVELOUS LIGHT!!!

I am a Real Housewives watcher too! They just keep getting more and more crazy….I know I need to stop watching them soon- and maybe get rid of the tv all together!

I have been “off” the bandwagon for only two days now and it is hard to pass by those channels and not stop and watch. But I have been doing it. It has given me more time to focus on other things that can enhance my life. I have been quite productive if I say so myself.

I TOTALLY understand how you feel. I was addicted to those shows as well. But watching women beat up on each other and act a fool started making me really sad. I decided to cut back my reality TV viewing as well. Congrats on getting your brain cells back!
