The Story Of Judy Smith And What It Means To Me!

Have you heard of the new ABC television show creating by Shonda Rhimes called Scandal? If not, then let me tell the premise of the show. It is the “real life” story of a woman who is a “fixer”. She is not a fixer of problems but a fixer of people. Some call people like this a “spin doctor” or “life coach”.

The character Olivia Pope is played by actress Kerry Washington who is portraying the real life story of Judy Smith. She is one of the world’s top PR strategists. She has worked with Michael Vick during his crisis with the dog-fighting ring and was a former deputy press secretary to President George H.W. Bush.

I love this quote by Ms. Smith that I read in Essence Magazine…”In a crisis, you’re coming into a stranger’s life and that person has to tell you the worst thing that’s ever happened to them and I take that responsibility very seriously”.

That quote made me think of the church and our responsibilities as the body of Christ. People come into the church broken, in bad situations, and looking for help. Our church visionary (pastor), ministry leaders, and congregation then become PR strategists for God. We are to take them in, hear their stories without judgement, and feed them with the Word of God so that positive changes can be made in their lives. People can’t go back and change their past but they can change their circumstance.

What does the story of Judy Smith mean to me? When people ask me what I do, why I blog, and what is my role as First Lady in the church….my answer now is that I am a PR specialist for God. I work at my craft, study it to be approved, and share it with the world. When I went to business school, strategic planning was my best subject. I consider myself to be an expert in developing strategies for life and business that have proven to be successful. With my blog, I share stories of what strategies I use, through faith and grace, that assist me in being successful. God has been too good to me to just sit silently.

Even though I am taking another “spin” on the show, it has given me the answer to that ever asked question that I have been looking for. Sometimes the Lord uses unconventional ways to show you your purpose. Don’t miss the ways that the Lord is trying to get His message to you!

2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The show Scandal premieres Thursday April 5th 10/9c.
