As we begin to wrap up the summer fun and get prepared to send the kiddos back to school, if you haven’t been as vigilant with maintaining some reading during the summer, please join me for 25 days and 25 books!!!
Beginning today, pull out 25 books from your child’s current stash and commit to reading one with your child everyday leading up to the 1st day of school. If your child is like mine and heading to kindergarten, then you can pick ones that you can read to them first and for them to read to you. What I do (since my son is a beginner reader) is to just pick out certain words for him to read instead of having him try to read the whole story. Familiarizing them with words is just as good as reading the whole story. They will soon be able to put it all together.
If you have children heading to preschool, just the fact that you are spending dedicated time reading with them will make a huge difference. My son’s preschool allowed them to go to their library once a week and pick out a book of their choice. Even though they cannot read, they do get excited recognizing books in the library that they are already familiar with.
If you are a Tennessean you should be very familiar with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library where you can have a book mailed to your child every month (up until kindergarten) and create your own library at home. Love this program!!
If you want to join us for the 25 days reading program, leave me a comment here and follow me on my Facebook Fan page where at the beginning of each week we will be supporting and encouraging each other and at the end of the week, we can comment on what books we read for the week.
Good Luck and I hope you join us!!!
