We began using Starfall about three years ago when Thomas was 3 years old and it has given us appropriate learning applications at every age. The preschool learning is great and the math is fun and relevant.
This summer, we are concentrating on reading and Math as our major focus and also throwing in some critical thinking skills.
Access to the website without purchasing a membership is very useful for having your child get a feel for what they can do, learn, and play. I would recommend doing this for the summer to see if this is the site for your child (I promise it is). After three years, we have now purchased the home access membership for $35/yr and have access to these things for first graders:
Talking library that holds 30 fiction and non-fiction books that can be read aloud by site or words highlighted by child for reading.
- Literature and informational texts which includes Greek myths, Chinese fable, Folk tales, Poetry, Plays and Art Gallery among others.
- Phonological Awareness and Phonics
- Operations and Algebraic Thinking
- Base Ten Numbers and Operations
- Measurement and Geometry
This site is so easy for your child to navigate on their own but I recommend being available while your child is using it. Some things may require a little extra explanation or assistance and you also want to make sure your child understands what they are supposed to learn from each lesson.
I will be doing a weekly review here of our progress using Starfall this summer so stay tuned.
